Leaving Certificate Applied

Leaving Certificate Applied

The Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) is a distinct, two-year senior cycle programme designed by the Department of Education for students who wish to follow a more practical and vocationally oriented path. It provides a valuable alternative to the traditional Leaving Certificate, offering students the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills and competencies relevant to adult and working life.

Purpose of the Programme

The LCA is intended for students who may benefit from a more practical approach to learning, and who prefer to be assessed through continuous coursework rather than terminal examinations. The programme encourages personal development, self-directed learning, and active participation in real-world tasks.

Programme Structure

The Leaving Certificate Applied is structured around a series of modules that are delivered over four sessions (two years). Students undertake study in a number of key areas.

Additionally, students complete practical tasks, engage in work experience placements, and develop personal reflection and planning skills.

Assessment and Certification

Assessment in the LCA programme is continuous and varied, with students earning credits throughout the two years. Credits are awarded for:

  • Completion of modules

  • Performance in key assignments

  • Practical tasks

  • Final examinations

A maximum of 200 credits may be achieved, with a minimum of 120 credits required for certification. The final award is granted at one of three levels: Pass, Merit, or Distinction.

Progression Opportunities

While the LCA does not provide direct access to higher education through the CAO system, it offers progression routes to:

  • Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) courses

  • Apprenticeships and traineeships

  • Further Education and Training (FETAC/QQI Levels 5 and 6)

  • Direct entry to the workforce

LCA students who successfully complete a PLC course may also have opportunities to progress to higher education through the Higher Education Links Scheme.

At Coláiste Abhainn Rí, we are committed to supporting the holistic development of all our students. The Leaving Certificate Applied is delivered by a dedicated team of teachers who work in close partnership with parents, guardians, and the wider school community to ensure each student reaches their full potential.
